Prof. Dr. Abdulaziz bin Hamid Abuzinada

Regarded as one of the most outstanding scientists in the Arab Gulf states, Prof. Dr. Abuzinada has earned international acclaim for his scholarship and service, evidenced by successive years of sustained, meritorious and exceptional teaching, research, conservation and skills-based volunteerism  

After graduating from King Saud University in Riyadh in 1962, he obtained his Master degree from the University of Minnesota in 1966 and was awarded his Ph.D. in Biology in 1971 from the University of Durham in the United Kingdom. Subsequent to working at the Faculty of Science, King Saud University for 15 years in different posts, Prof. Abuzinada became the Secretary General of the National Commission for Wildlife Conservation and Development (NCWCD) in Saudi Arabia since its establishment in 1986. In this function, he played a key part in the establishment of 16 national protected areas in Saudi Arabia, supplemented with an extensive record of voluntary work with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In the past he has received numerous awards and honorary degrees, served on many advisory boards for the government, academic institutions, scientific societies, international organizations and companies. He authored or co-authored numerous publications and has been the recipient of seven international awards including the prestigious IUCN’s CNPPA Fred Packard Award for Distinguished Achievements in Wildlife Preservation and Environmental Protection, Caracas, Venezuela, 1992. Chair of the Arabian Plant Specialist Group; Chair of the IUCN West Asia Advisory Group and is a Vice Chair of the Species Survival Commission of IUCN. Chair Standing Committee of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals of the Bonn Convention; Vice President of IUCN from 2000-04.

Nomination of the first President

The first President of the Network has been successfully nominated by our open online nomination process with a 96% popular vote and was thereafter elected by the first General Assembly.

Prof. Dr. Abdulaziz bin Hamid Abuzinada accepted his nomination to be the first NDRD president on December 5, 2006 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

NDRD certainly feels honored to have found such an outstanding scholar!
